Learn English Through Songs

Songs can be of vast importance and assistance in obtaining vocabulary in second language. My love of music and my curiosity have both proven to be a major springboard to my success in retaining a wide vocabulary range in the English language. I believe teenagers can connect easier to songs than anything else and that it enables them to gain knowledge without them having to go through too much effort. In my perspective, the key is using things that are self-relevant, familiar, and enjoyable to the student for the benefit of the teacher to teach more effectively. This way, students show more interest and are more likely to internalize vocabulary.

On an even larger scale, music should be used in education not only because of its usefulness in the classroom, but also because of its inherent qualities; from my experience, bringing songs to class often times inspires uninhibited ideas to float through discussions. Analyzing the meaning of songs enables students to gain new insights, helps uncover possibilities, and encourages open mindedness. Using songs to teach vocabulary is worth looking into, because it may facilitate both the teaching and learning processes, and at the same time contribute to the students' general knowledge and awareness. Since teachers are considered educators above all, using songs in an ESL classroom will not only widen the students' vocabulary but will also help build a richer inner world and widen the horizons of everyone involved in the process. Teachers and students together can take part in reaching this common goal, moving from the traditional method of translation to a more fun, engaging, interesting, challenging, and effective way of learning English.
